Hello! My name is Dahlia, and I am a passionate instructor and lover of piano. I am a recent college grad from UC Santa Cruz who studied learning and memory. I’ve also been playing piano for 15 years and trained in ABRSM, which is an international music examination board. I participated in a couple piano competitions and have lots of experience performing. I was even a keyboardist in a band when I was a kid! I’m excited to pass on my knowledge and love of music to you, your child, or both. Welcome!
I’ve been informally teaching piano to friends and family for 2 years. Now I have my own studio in Santa Ana to teach out of! It’s exciting to design lessons and explain concepts in a concise way so students of all ages and skill levels will understand. Since I specialized in learning and memory in college, I have an extensive knowledge about the best study methods and techniques for learning. This will ensure that lessons will adequately challenging, yet exciting enough to keep them motivated!
For young beginners, I like to use Alfred’s Basic Piano Library books. The songs inside are simple, fun, and are a great introduction to piano and music theory! For older beginners and more advanced students, I’ll use Piano Adventures and The Piano Bench of Classical Music. I’ll also throw in a favorite theory and technique book according to student’s age. My lessons will consist of classical piano training — theory, technique, and performance — but we can apply this to any piece the student wants to learn!
In teaching piano, half my focus is on the student playing the music. The other half involves learning how to move your hands, how to practice effectively (especially when you hate it!) and how to stay excited about piano. Some lessons will focus on different things each time depending on each student’s goals. I’d love to end up having recitals every year so that my students can demonstrate what they’ve been working on! Piano is difficult, so there’s going to be a lot of “ learning to love” in my lessons. It’ll all be worth it!
