BA, Ohio State University, Economics Self-taught guitar, ukelele, piano, mandolin, mountain dulcimer, banjo, other stringed instruments
I have performed many concerts throughout the US and Europe since 1969. In addition, I have performed at many small events and weddings. I produced a CD of my own solo compositions in 2003. I am currently approximately 75% finished recording a second CD of duet and multi-instrument compositions.
My students have placed well in Regional and State-wide fine arts competitions, including twice winning first place in Ohio against thousands of other students. (2011 Guitar and 2013 Mandolin. American Association of Christian Schools of Ohio Academic and Fine Arts Competition).
A few of my students have gone on to earn BA/music and MA/Performance Classical Guitar and are active professional musicians.
I have been teaching guitar, piano, and other stringed instruments full-time since 1994. Prior to that, I was self-employed in the fast food and snack food industry. I love teaching! I finally gave up my business career for my life's passion and enjoy every minute of it! If I won the lottery tomorrow, the day after I would still be teaching music.
I teach children as young as 6, and adults well into retirement. I first assess the student's musical goals, then tailor the teaching method to achieve those goals. Some students want to just have fun, some want to learn "hum and strum", while others want to prepare for competitions or perfomances or go on to become professional musicians. Beginners and novice students first learn the basics of music theory by progressing through an established music course. More advanced students thrive by learning individual pieces. I enjoy helping my students understand the music theory behind the pieces they're learning. Consequently, they must learn to read and understand printed music.
I like to tailor my approach to make music FUN for my students. I don't want them to ever think practice is a chore. My students don't "work" their insturments, they "play" them.
