I've toured the USA 3+ times, Canada 1.5 times, & Europe
Overview:
I started playing drums at age 10 thanks to my father, who is a drummer and always had a drum set or two set up in the garage. I joined the school band in 5th grade, but soon quit, as I was distracted in school and it was a little too academic. It was in 6th grade that I started my first band with some friends, and I've played in various bands ever since. I'm self taught, and playing music in a band has taught me nearly everything I know about music. Since I learned how to play music in a non-academic setting, I learned about music theory AFTER I had the ability to intuitively mimic what I was hearing - I am an advocate of the unorthodox path.
EXPERIENCE
I first began teaching in 2012 with a brief year-long stint teaching (drums and guitar) at Sam Ash. I took a few years off and began teaching private lessons again in 2018. During COVID i was teaching lessons via skype which enabled me to continue online lessons.

METHODS USED
My methods are in service of the cultivation of interest. Mainly I want the student to focus on learning how to play the music they want to play. The key to cultivating interest is to nurture the social, communicative and fun elements of playing music; associating the laughter and exhilaration with learning. I'm a self taught musician - I know that music is intuitive enough to learn without getting overly text-book about it, and I think focusing too much on the book at an early age can turn away potential musicians. I'm a firm believer in the unorthodox. My job is to make myself obsolete as quick as possible, and luckily this is very achievable in music. We will be flexing our dissection muscles, and training our ears so that my students will learn how to dissect and imitate sounds independent of a teacher.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style relies heavily upon training the ear to dissect what it is hearing. Developing the ear is crucial to being a self-reliant musician. In drums, the visualization how a rhythm works in time is essential to being able to perform that rhythm. Dissection and mapping are the key to furthering one's abilities on the drum kit. In guitar or in piano, being able to isolate frequencies with your ear will lead you to a more accurate understanding for chord structures and progressions than simply looking up tabs, which are often deeply flawed.
