BA, University of Vermont, Minor in Jazz Studies MA, Western Connecticut State University, Counselor Education
Overview:
I started playing the guitar at the age of 17, after seeing a few live concerts in New Haven (Blues Traveler, Allman Brothers Band, and Phish). I remember sitting and watching in amazement and was inspired to go out, purchase a guitar and attempt to learn some of this music. It was a struggle at first, but with some hard work, determination and willingness I was able to play a few songs fairly well. I began taking lessons and eventually studied music at the University of Vermont and took my first lesson with a well-known jazz instructor, Steve Blair at UVM. Learning jazz techniques and the Berkley Guitar Method allowed me to understand complex music, making rock, blues, and folk fairly easy to grasp. After 20 plus years of playing guitar and performing live, I continue to study with a private teacher, which helps me stay focused and on track! Playing guitar is a life-long passion of mine, and I enjoy helping student’s find their own success and talent.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching guitar during college at a local middle school and enjoyed working with younger students. I have always maintained a group of students who I teach on a part-time basis. I also work as a college counselor, so I teach guitar because I thoroughly enjoy helping students learn and play guitar.
METHODS USED
I cater my lessons according to the students experience level. For beginners, I teach them a few chords, exercises and get them playing their favorite songs fairly quickly. This helps build some positive steps and motivates the student to keep playing. For more experienced students, I use the Berkley Guitar Method, teaching them chords, scales and simple songs which puts the theory into practice. I also teach students to read music, which helps them understand music theory and song structure. However, playing and having fun are most important aspects of my teaching method!
LESSON STYLE
If students do not enjoy the music lessons, they will most likely quit the instrument. Therefore, I allow my students to choose their goals and help them by creating lessons that are fun as well as rewarding.
