Personal instruction in music theory and performance from various professionals. University level instruction in theory and performance.
Overview:
I began playing in 1984. My first guitar was won in a game of billiards; to this day I'm not sure if my opponent let me win or not - he was an accomplished player in his own right and I admired his skills. I immediately fell in love with the guitar and began a mission of immersing myself in all things Led Zeppelin. My style quickly evolved into something one could describe as Jimmy Page-esque. From there I took on more technically challenging genres and I was told by other players that I had an uncanny knack and good ear. I sought out professional instruction while still in High School. That changed everything and proved to be the catalyst for my future teaching career. Upon graduation from High School I began teaching beginning guitar. I had many great students. After several professional gigs along my career I have had the opportunity to teach along the way. I have played alongside many musical genius, including Steve Vai and bands like southern country-rock legend Molly Hatchett. As my student I promise to instill a love for this instrument unto you. You will learn your favorite songs, how to improvise in any genre, and learn why it all works - aka the "dreaded" music theory. Music is fun! If it's not fun you're doing it wrong. :)
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience extends back to just after High School graduation and my first year of university. Most of my students were younger than 16 years old. As I moved to other cities I have maintained a small following of loyal students. I have taught in Pittsburgh, PA, Indianapolis, IN, Chicago, IL, and various locations Southern California. No matter what location I have based my instructional business from, my core style of teaching has not changed: you can learn and have fun at the same time!
METHODS USED
After personal assessment of your skill level and knowledge, I will develop an indivualized lesson plan for you. In addition we will look at your interests and influences; you will learn to play some of your favorite songs. Through learning some of these songs you will build your repertoire while dissecting them to learn why they sound good! *** Techniques learned: *** * Proper picking technique * Proper left/right hand positioning * Tuning your guitar * Re-stringing your guitar * Chordal theory * Counting * And much more ... ***
LESSON STYLE
The guitar is a unique instrument to teach. So-called "mirroring" is a very effective way of showing another guitarist how to play. There are many videos on YouTube, Vimeo, etc. that rely solely on this technique. That is, if you want to learn how to play a certain song there are many "instructional" videos that you can watch. That is very simple. However, do not confuse those videos with guitar instruction. While those players may be instructors in their own right, mirroring is not teaching. You and I will mirror but there will be much more. I will show you proper technique and music theory - the common language by which all musicians communicate with each other. My purpose is to not only to get proficient on the guitar but to also turn you into a MUSICIAN!
