Sarah Lawrence College, BA in Creative Writing and Music Theory and Composition
I grew up in a musical family and my father was the rhythm guitarist for Michael Jackson for up to 30 years. I recently moved back to Los Angeles after attending The Master's School in Dobbs Ferry, New York, where I began my study in composition and theory. After graduating from the Master's School I went on to graduate from Sarah Lawrence where I continued my theoretical and compositional studies. I am able to integrate theoretical knowledge to basic folk songs. You won't even know you are learning music theory whilst playing along to the Beatles!
I have been teaching since I graduated from college. I have taught indiviudal lessons as well as large groups at performing arts camps. One thing I really strive to maintain is the student's motivation! I figure out where the student's interests remain and hone in so as to keep the lessons refreshing.
For novice players, I generally start with a simple song, usually one by the Beatles but most importantly, a song that the student loves and will feel a great accomplishment learning in order to gain confidence. Then I delve more specifically into technique. Each song should teach a technical lesson!
I hone into each student's area of interest and specify each lesson to the student. That way, the highest level of motivation is maintained in each lesson! I discuss with the student which genre they prefer to learn and which style they'd like to master!
