Private lesson from childhood and working with other musicians.

I love teaching piano to young ones and watch their convidence grow. I remember when at the age of 8, learning piano that my enthusiaism was overflowing, My instructor was strictly classical and I discovered Boogie. I was so dissappointed not to broaden my horizons and we parted ways. Music appreciation in public school gave me a wide range of influence to choose from. Sharing with other musicians also gave me experience to grow. So I learned to give the student what they want and keep them growing. My students are successful in performing.
I have taught piano and other instruments to my own children and those who were in our Home School group. I was an aide in public school at a one room school house in a small logging community where I gave lessons to any student that was interested for free. A Teacher in town kept me busy being supplied with students including her own. Moving to a larger city I taught at a Montessori School with 2 campuses, grades K-8. In this setting I learned from a colleague about group lessons and recitals. When the students composed their own music I gave them staff paper and showed them how to write it down. I spent one summer writing down music for an composer who can not read music, a gift to his grandchildren.
My philosophy is that music is part of life and useful in all phases of learning. You may have been labled "right brained" creative or 'left brained" analytical, music connects the two together. Music lessons asks the eyes, ears, and hands to work together connecting the two sides of the brain. Music can dramatically improve math and reading skills while building confidence and enjoyment.
I have used Hal Leonard and Bastien. If the parent has a older method book they wish to use I start there and fill in as I see needed. I encourage a slow start to get all the basics understood, then progress at the student's own pace and interests. Handouts and charts are supplemented as most students can't afford all the music books requested in a series. If a student feels frustrated then a short walk from piano to the other side of the room shaking out the arms and fingers gets us back on track. Lots of commendation and praise is given. Parents are invited to watch quietly from the side with students permission.
I loved taking piano lessons from Dana. She is so patient, knowledgeable and full of encouragement. I wish she hadn't moved away.
