I am a passionate musician with a desire to teach the information that I have learned over the course of my past years working with legendary Opera singers, recording with Blues artists, playing in a country band alongside friends, and touring with metal musicians. I am versatile and believe that all forms of singing and music are art, and deserve equal chance to learn how to perform healthily. I began singing professionally when I was 14 years old shortly after receiving a full-ride scholarship to attend Music and Arts Institute in Independence, Missouri. I began my high school career as a baritone, but my voice quickly changed to Tenor and I began singing higher repertoire. I performed with Scotty Dennis and the Soultones, Band of Brothers, have released two pop singles, and continue as a student at Wichita State University where I am in their Opera program. I love music in every form, and find it important to be flexible as a vocalist and sing in many different genres in order to be as versatile of a musician as possible.
I have recently begun teaching within the past year, but have worked with various record-holding Metropolitan Opera stars of which I learned Voice Pedagogy, Several blues, and country artists, as well as rock singers. I encourage my students to connect with their body when singing, relax, and let their voice soar! Every genre and skill set is welcome! If students aren't having fun, and enjoying the time that we spend letting our voices out, I am doing my job wrong. I encourage my students to practice, enter competitions, recitals, and performances as long as they are comfortable.
I adapt each lesson to the performer's desires. Whether they are getting ready for contest, or a battle of the bands. I focus on the ancient Italian technique known as Bel Canto, and focus on the Alexander method of support. These are important fundamentals to familiarize yourself with as they are the building blocks that make up healthy singing. I typically begin by addressing posture, and breath support, then move onto resonance and creating open space to sing comfortably. I focus on helping the student understand what it is that their body is doing.
I focus on engaging my younger students, encouraging them to find their voice, and focusing on fun along the way. It is important that younger students have fun, and are encouraged to continue learning this art form. For adult students, I focus on repertoire and material that they want to focus on learning in their own style. I emphasize breath support, body alignment, connectivity, and remaining comfortable. I frequently compliment the student's effort and work, as I understand the struggles that they are having, and it is important to recognize their strengths and help them overcome their weaknesses in order to succeed.
