I have been a touring musician for the past 15 years. Now that I’m local I’d love the opportunity to give back and help bridge the gap between the professional working working world and budding musicians. I have an Associate’s degree in Professional Music and years and years of experience both as a drummer and an acoustic guitar player. The music world is like no other. It’s not for everyone. That being said, if you’re passionate and motivated, I can help you hone the skills needed to succeed!
I’ve been teaching lessons on and off for many years through my career. It’s a great way to earn supplementary income while in between tours. Teaching not only offers a perspective outside of the normal working profile, it acts as a way to reinforce systems and concepts for the instructor which, in turn, creates an ideal learning environment for the student. I teach real life practical approaches to playing and learning. Students will have the opportunity to show what they’ve learned, incorporate their new skills into their own repertoire and execute their new skills in fun, innovative and creative ways.
I like to build the lesson plan around the student. Everyone learns differently so it’s simply a matter of assessing each student individually. There are fundamentals in both guitar and drums and once I learn about my new student, I am able to build a strategic plan that allows us to effectively communicate so that we can make the most out of our lesson/practice time. I like to find a way to relate. That is what makes for real growth in the workshop. That’s how you shed. It’s an understanding that occurs and once it does, the motion no longer seems difficult. Even if it takes some time to get the motor skills sharp and loose, the concept has been grasped and that is all it takes. The rest is relentless repetition with a metronome.
This is a two way street. I will always listen to my student as I would expect in return. An open mind is essential in learning new motor skills as well exporting a new creative platform. I work with my students to understand the concept of teaching your mind/body new motor skills and muscle memory. This is much more than just learning an instrument, it is learning an entire system of patterns and lists. It is wrapping your mind around concepts and exploring many new perspectives. It’s all in the way you look at things.
