I'm a guitarist and teacher, committed to providing quality music education for college-level students and all experience levels. Well versed in classical, jazz, and popular guitar styles, I'm also comfortable teaching music theory. I design personalized lessons designed to meet the student’s interests and goals while also focusing on broadening their musical horizons and enhancing their technical abilities. I strive to keep a highly motivated teaching environment, focused on getting results through positive reinforcement and constant reassessments of the student’s progress towards their goals. I pride myself on my extensive teaching and performing experience, and enjoy building lasting relationships with students while being an active member in the local music community. In addition to teaching, I perform around 250 gigs a year in local and regional music festivals and at local restaurants/hotels/bars as a leader and a sideman.
I've been teaching guitar and general music lessons since high school, where I would assist the music teacher in guitar and theory classes because of my advanced skill level. During my undergraduate studies in college, I put myself through school teaching private lessons in my home and at various music stores, churches, and performing arts schools, teaching around 200 students in 5 years. When I went back to school to get my masters degree, I was awarded an assistantship and taught music theory, music appreciation, jazz ensembles, and jazz improvisiation at the university, in addition to keeping a robust private guitar studio on the side. Since moving to New Orleans in the Summer of 2013, I've kept up a moderate-sized studio while performing 3-6 nights a week in some of the top music venues throughout the city.
I customize my lessons to each student as best as possible. For certain skill levels/styles I may recommend books or other materials, but for the most part I teach from scratch, making detailed lesson plans and notes for each individual student. I like to focus on technique, music theory fundamentals, and learning repertoire in each lesson.
I'm passionate about music and the guitar, and I strive to communicate and instill that passion in my students. I like my students to have lesson-to-lesson and long-term goals, and firmly believe in pushing my students to be the best they can be. I like to constantly ask my students questions so I'm more receptive to their thoughts and needs.
