Overview:
I am a dedicated musician who is determined to continue to grow in my craft. I have had the pleasure of playing, and studying with many great musicians that have different backgrounds in music. I have received an Associates degree in music from De Anza college in Cupertino, California. I currently play in three different bands, ranging from big band jazz, combo jazz, rock, fusion, and r&b/pop. I have had the pleasure of playing the San Jose summer jazz festival as well as many venues around the bay area. I come from a musical family who have been very supportive of my musical career. Many if not most of my friends are professional musicians who I play music with regularly.
EXPERIENCE
Though I do not have much teaching experience, I have taken a lot of private lessons from top notch drummers in the bay area. I am very familiar with the process of going from being self taught to intense drum lessons and gigs. This process takes hard work and dedication. It also takes a lot of passion to make music and that is something that I can bring to private lessons. I often show fellow musicians that I play with different approaches to playing the drums and they show me different ideas on their instruments as well.
METHODS USED
For younger students fundamentals are essential. I would start with things such as rudiments, and coordination exercises. These are the things that everything in drumming is built from, so everything else will come naturally and easier. For the older students I would find out their experience level and work around their strengths and interest. I would show them things that a professional musician is expected to know, such as being able to play simple to complex grooves with good time. I would also go over how to play with other musicians effectively.
LESSON STYLE
I am able to make adjustments for any student when I feel it is needed. The main thing that I try to pass on is joy and enthusiasm for making music. This goes a long way in the process of learning new things on an instrument. A lack of focus will hamper progression. My teaching style is very focused and heavily built around repetition. Repetition very important when it comes to practicing , playing gigs, learning songs, and many other things. The best way to learn is through repetition of proper technique.
