I have been teaching lessons for over 5 years, starting when I was in college. I encourage stringent and regular practicing outside of lesson times, and am always available via text or email for students to ask me questions. I firmly believe that classical technique is essential to creating safe and beautiful sound, and can be adapted into any style the singer wants to focus on. Every student learns differently, and I treat every student as an individual in that capacity. I have worked with students ranging in ages from 8 years old to 35 years old. I encourage my students to participate in recitals and I use film/audio recordings each lesson to show my students the changes in final result that my teaching creates.
For beginning students, be they young or seasoned, I start from the very beginning with breathing and the anatomy of the body as it pertains to singing. As my students progress (or depending on their understanding of the basics) I move into more detailed work, such as how to feel and focus the placement of the sound in a locations within the singing mechanism. For adults, or pupils with more advanced understanding, I focus on musicality and how to use the lyrics and to make the song more interesting and grab the audience's attention.
My teaching style varies from student to student. Everyone learns differently and I tailor each lesson based on that particular student's learning style. Each student will start off with warmups, even if they have warmed up themselves, so I can gauge how their voice is working on that particular day. After warmups, which encompass specific exercises based on the needs of the student, we move into working technique into repertoire. I will at that time focus on the lyrics and getting my students to think about how to use the words to add interest and depth to the music they are singing.
