Overview:
I’m a freelance drummer, percussionist, and educator based in New York City. You can hear me playing drums and percussion for a wide range of Broadway shows, including Hamilton, Book of Mormon, Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked, and Avenue Q. In the fall of 2016 I originated the drum book for the Off-Broadway show Ride The Cyclone. I can be heard on RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Trixie Mattel's debut EP "Two Birds" released in May 2017. I’ve also worked with Rumer Willis, Matt Gould, Doreen Montalvo, Ryan Raftery, and Ben Platt among other singers and composers.
As an active drum instructor, I provide one-on-one lessons to all ages and skill levels. I also teach materclasses and workshops at local schools, colleges, and universities in the New York and Philadelphia areas. I hold a Master's Degree in Jazz Studies from the University of the Arts, and a Bachelor's Degree in Drum Set Performance from the University of the Arts.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching since my first few semesters of college when my step-father (also a drum instructor) asked me to consult for him with his drumline at Arch Bishop Wood High School in Pennsylvania. From that experience I began teaching private lessons throughout college. Immediately after graduation I began teaching in a formal music school in Ardmore PA where I was able to teach students from ages 4-60 years old. I encourage regular and consistent practice in order to improve but I also encourage fun. Who wants to be bored?! Learning an instrument should not be a chore. It should be exciting and motivating, which is what I try to instill in my students regardless of age or skill level.
METHODS USED
For beginning students who DON'T own or have access to a drum set I try to start with basic snare drum technique which can be played either on a snare drum or a practice pad. For students who DO own or have regular access to a full set of drums I like to get them on the drum set as soon as posible playing along with songs they like, again encouraging personal discovery and fun! There's nothing worse than buying a drum set to start learning to play, only to have your teacher tell you, "You won't be ready for that for a year." I like to get eveyone playing something fun and interesting as soon as possible. Some examples of books I like to use with beginning students are the "Breeze Easy Drum Method," "Alfred's Drum Method," and Ted Reed's "Syncopation." Songs we may often start lessons with would be "We Will Rock You" by Queen, "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin, "Back in Black" by AC/DC, etc.
LESSON STYLE
Everyone learns an instrument for different reasons and I think it's very important to acknowlege that and recognize acheivements students make regardless of how small they may seem. I strive in every lesson to find what excites a student about music and what gets them interested to learn. I want students to be constantly engaged, challenged, and invigorated by music so that they too can develop a passion for music like I have. If you aren't having fun in our lessons I'm not doing my job right!
