Overview:
I'm a guitar teacher with roots in the classical and folk traditions. I've been playing since I was 13, and with the help of my amazing teachers I've progressed from a beginner guitarist to a mature musician. I've collaborated with some amazing musicians over the years, and tacked some of the great masterpieces. My greatest love is combining folk traditions with classical training.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching 5 years ago, helping a college student expand his skills in music. Since then I've taught a number of others in all age groups. I've found that the best way to teach is to not teach; I feel that the experience is more fun and beneficial for the student if I help guide them through their own journey in music. Rather than set a strict curriculum that I the student must rigidly follow I have a number of resources that I draw from to make a flexible program to keep it interesting and enjoyable, as well as sharpening important concepts. This does not mean that I expect little from my students. I expect quite a high standard from them, and I will do everything in my power to help them achieve that.
METHODS USED
This is the basic pattern I use for all my students. I will adjust it depending on the age of the student. I like to start with the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method. Once basic note reading is learned the student will move on to easy solo repertoire; I want to introduce "real" pieces as early as possible to give a sense of accomplishment to the student. At this point I start teaching music theory to give a thurough understanding of what the student is playing. After learning most of the notes we will work mostly with individual pieces to increase the students musicality and skill.
LESSON STYLE
In the style of my teachers, I like to start the lesson by reviewing the concepts discussed in the last lesson. After reviewing we will build on those topics with new ideas and skills. Finally we will set goals for the student to accomplish during the next week. The goals will be reasonable to accomplish in that amount of time.
