Overview:
I am a compassionate instructor and am excited to share my love of music with my students. My philosophy is that the student comes first and the music comes second. I attended Oklahoma City University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Musical Theatre. After leaving OCU I studied further voice lessons from Michael Crowley, a former member of the company at the Metropolitan Opera. I have played piano since I was 5 years old. I accompanied the choirs at Choctaw High School for two years and have been a choral conductor at three local area churches. While working at Choctaw I gave voice lessons to several of the choir students. I have directed the music for and performed in many local community theatres productions. I currently am the pianist for a church in Oklahoma City.
EXPERIENCE
I welcome students of all ages from five years and up. My teaching experience began over 20 years ago when I taught voice lessons to several of the choir students at Choctaw High School. I am passionate about music and about helping find the unique approach for each student. Music Theory is the language of music and I focus a portion of each lesson learning that language. I think it is important to incorporate both classical repertoire and music that is of specific interest to the student. The classical repertoire will reinforce the technique and specific lessons covered. The other pieces should also reinforce specific concepts and skills, but should be music the student enjoys. I strive to keep the lessons and the practice time engaging and rewarding. I cannot stress enough that music is a talent, and just as importantly a skill that anyone can develop. Like anything worthwhile that will last a lifetime, it is not developed over night. It takes time, commitment and consistency to become a skilled musician. I look forward to growing with my students and celebrating their accomplishments large and small.
METHODS USED
For beginning piano students I typically use the Alfred Method. Once the student demonstrates a grasp of the fundamentals I introduce solo repertoire. For adults I typically use the John Thompson Adult Piano Course and we work together to find the solo repertoire. For voice lessons, I typically teach the bel canto style. I will work with vocalises that help develop breath control, placement and open vowels. I also use the Music Theory for Singers program to teach Music Theory and also use solfeggi to build sight singing skills. I will typically start with the 24 Italian Songs and Arias as well as specific repertoire the student is interested in learning, whether it is musical theatre, opera or other popular music.
LESSON STYLE
I am warm and vulnerable, I find being open is the best way to develop my students' trust. Trust is key. It is important to me that students progress at their own pace however slow or fast that may be. I help set goals for development that are challenging but realistic. We will celebrate achieving those goals together. Nothing inspires me more than seeing the light go on inside a student as they grasp a challenging concept. A student must be comfortable enough to take the risks that are necessary to grow as a musician. Sometimes those risks will result in what seems to be a failure. I try to reinforce the idea that it is not a failure because you tried, what can we use from that experience to get closer to what you were trying to accomplish next time. Anyone willing to put in the effort and put their talent on display for correction and review is very brave and I honor that bravery.
