Overview:
I am an enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor who loves sharing my love of music with students. In 2011 I graduated from Haverford College as a Music Minor and History Major. I write songs constantly and have performed hundreds of times as both a solo artist and with bands that I have formed. I have performed in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, North Carolina, Texas and Louisiana. I work every day to become a better singer, songwright, and instrumentalist, and I appreciate working with those who share a similar drive to excel. I moved to New Orleans in May 2015 and formed a local band, Poor Peter. You might catch us performing at a local venue such as The House of Blues, Circle Bar or Hi-Ho Lounge.
EXPERIENCE
I began taking guitar lessons at the age of thirteen and continued for about two years before teaching myself the rest. My styes of playing range from folk-style fingerpicking (see video) to rock 'n roll, blues jazz, and Broadway. I began teaching private music lessons while in High School. My first guitar student went on to pursue a degree in Guitar Performance at Redlands University and is launching a career as a fulltime musician. I have had the pleasure of teaching several other students along the way, as I pursue my own music career, recording albums and playing tours. My students have told me that my lessons are always fun while still being challenging, which I think is as it should be. I will have you playing songs in no time, and then I will start pushing you to get to the next level!
METHODS USED
I begin with the fundamentals of music theory that you will need to begin playing your instrument, and then I like to get straight into learning songs as quickly as possible. The student may choose what songs to learn (recommended) or I can make suggestions. You will learn a range of skills including tuning, instrument care, song struture, chords, soloing, and MUCH MORE. My goal is for you not just to learn to play certain notes or chords, but also understand why that note or chord fits where it does. This knowledge will be key to your success in composition and collaboration.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is student-driven. I want to know what you are setting out to accomplish with your instrument of choice so I can help you to achieve your goals. There are many techniques I know that will help you to master basic skills on your instrument as well as the more individualized skills you will need to excel in your particular style of music. I can't wait to hear about what excites YOU most about music so I can help you to become the kind of musician you want to be. I do expect students to practice between lessons. Practicing at home is the only way to make progress with your instrument. Then lessons can serve as an opportunity to discover new sounds and skills, correct any bad habits you may be forming, and discuss aspects of the musician's life that go beyond simply playing, if that is where your interests lie.
