Overview:
I'm the lead guitar player and songwriter in a Philadelphia band who play a progressive blend of Rock, Funk, Americana, Jazz, and Dance music. I also perform frequently as a solo act and acoustic duo around the region and host my own open mic Wednesday nights. I've been playing for twelve years now and although my degree is not in music I took a number of college level music courses in jazz guitar and classical composition and lessons for the better part of my childhood. It has been a true gift to have the opportunity to make music my career and meet so many inspiring and supportive people on this journey. Having students is one of the most inspiring aspects of my career because it allows me not only to share my passion, but pass it on to other curious individuals.
EXPERIENCE
I first started teaching group lessons at a yoga studio where I was employed in the Spring of 2018. The popularity of those lessons was limited, but I found when I had students I enjoyed engaging with them one on one and discussing my craft. I quit my job at the yoga studio and committed my time to marketing myself as a guitar teacher instead. Since then I have been teaching lessons out of my South Philadelphia home and practice studio as well as online to students of all ages, generally beginners, but also occasionally more experienced players.
METHODS USED
For beginners I like to start with note identification, octaves, and basic open CAGED chords then move to the open minor chords, pentatonic, and major scales next . As students understanding of the fret board develops I try to move these concepts into other position by highlighting relativity and connecting chord shapes as they're highlighted in different scale patterns. In the meanwhile I like to offer students song material relevant to these concepts for practice. More intermediate students I let guide themselves by asking what they want to learn as well as what styles and artists they are most interested in so I can further tailor lessons to their interests and abilities.
LESSON STYLE
I find students are most successful when they set their own goals. I like to ask each new pupil what kind of music they like, what they want to learn, and what their expectations are before we start. I believe it's most important to tailor my lessons to the specific person. Although I believe there are a number of techniques every player needs to learn I believe there are a plenty of ways to approach these fundamentals. Students are most enthusiastic when they're interested in what they are learning and not constricted by rigid lesson plans or pre-set goals. For younger students I like to offer material in a variety of styles to see what they most naturally gravitate to and help them develop a love for music as it interests them.
