As a music teacher, I am passionate about giving people of all ages the tools for self-expression and collaboration. I am a performer, flautist and singer-songwriter based in Philadelphia and I have been an active member of the music community for over a decade. With a background in poetry and creative writing, my compositions combine storytelling and collage, and draw from my roots in folk music and R&B. I have performed at music festivals such as South X Southwest, Firefly, XPoNential Music Festival, and I have opened for legendary acts such as Questlove and Talib Kweli. My most notable work is as a flautist and vocalist in the 9-piece hip hop collective Hardwork Movement®. My newest musical project, Dani & Joe, is a collaboration with drummer/songwriter Joe Perullo and our first single, “All For You,” is now out on all streaming platforms.
I first started teaching as a teenager, helping out in a religious classroom on the weekends during the year, and as a summer camp counselor in the summer. I have taught many creative subjects, including music, poetry, and song writing. I have always loved teaching, learning is one of the greatest ways two minds can connect - of any age! I really love music theory, and enjoy using whatever style of music my students are interested in as a pathway to gain more knowledge and understanding of the music my students play. In my lessons, I value both exploring self expression and introducing new concrete information in each lesson. Self expression can manifest in picking songs we learn, learning how to improvise, exploring dynamics and tone quality, song writing, and countless other ways! Play and performance are very important to the learning process and are great ways to explore the skills my students acquire. I always encourage my students to seek out performance opportunities, the world needs your voice!
I enjoy tailoring my lesson plans and materials for each individual student. For beginning students, a like to start with a beginning method book tailored to the student's interests. I find that learning and memorizing songs and simple repertoire is an effective way for beginning and intermediate students to advance, and that following students interest goes a long way for the learning process! I like to also offer repertoire options that are among the most famous and well known for the instrument. There are often good lessons that go along with these pieces, and I pick pieces that are famous for good reason! For students of any level, it is useful to have a combination of repertoire that is more challenging, and pushes my students to see beyond their current skill level, as well as repertoire that allows them to enjoy the expression that is possible with their current skill level. There are 4 components to every lesson, and for me, every practice sessions as well: warm up exercises, technical exercises, repertoire, and play (aka performing the repertoire, improvising, writing music, etc).
My teaching style is relaxed and organic. Don't get me wrong, we will work hard! But it will be fun and enriching. I teach my students to appreciate the music they make, and to listen to themselves for what is working well, in addition to what can be improved. At the end of each lesson, the student and I collaborate to make goals for daily practice. Every few weeks, my students and I collaborate on goals for next few weeks and the next few months. The pace of learning and progress is set by each individual student.
