Music has always been extraordinarily important in my life, and I love seeing when other people share that love of music. I've been playing guitar for 14+ years, and have been playing professionally for 10+ years. In that time I've played hundreds of shows with many different groups in styles including rock, blues, jazz-fusion, jazz, avant-garde, and more. I've lived and performed in New Mexico, Illinois, and for the past 6 years, Texas. I had the opportunity to study guitar with two masters of the guitar, Dave Manley (played with Herbie Hancock, Jill Scott, The Roots, and others) for one year and Mike Stern (played with Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, and many others) for 5 months. In addition to that, I took a semester of Music Theory at Columbia College Chicago, and I study/practice guitar regularly on my own. Music is my life, and I am happy to share what I've learned so far with students who are interested in music.
I've taught people guitar and music related concepts for years, and I consider it an honor to be able to help people reach their musical goals. Whether it's just a few suggestions here and there, or full-on lessons, I always do my best to give advice that makes a positive difference. I make it a priority to try to relate what I'm teaching to whatever style the student wants to play in, and I explain how each concept will help the student progress. I never want anyone to feel like they don't know why they're practicing what they're practicing!
My method is based on each student's age, skill level, enthusiasm/interest level, and their wants/needs. For beginner students, it is important to start with the basic fundamentals and techniques, but once those are mastered, there is more freedom to explore. For intermediate students, we work on filling in gaps they may have in their current understanding of music/guitar, and anything else they want to work toward. For advanced students, what we work on is really just up to the student and whichever areas they would like to improve in.
My approach to teaching is based on the goals of each individual student. I always ask the student what their skill level is and what their goals are, and I use that information to create the right lesson for each individual. I also always encourage students to be honest about what they like and don't like about the lessons, and I am never bothered if a student doesn't like something or wants to do things differently. In other words, every student is the captain of their own ship, and I am just an advisor helping to guide them on their way to a better understanding of the guitar. There will be no judgement here!
