ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Master Degree: State Conservatory in Yerevan
Overview:
I am Ani Cholakyan, a professional pianist and dedicated music educator with a rich background in classical music. My formal training began at the prestigious Tchaikovsky School for Gifted Children and continued at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan, Armenia (former USSR), where I earned a Master’s degree in Piano Performance, with additional specializations in piano pedagogy and chamber ensemble performance. My expertise includes teaching piano technique, musicianship, music theory, ear training, and sight-reading, tailored to students of all ages and skill levels. For more than 20 years, I have successfully directed the Young Virtuoso Music Academy in Diamond Bar, California. My students consistently excel in competitive music programs such as MTAC’s Certificate of Merit, ABRSM, and Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory. Many achieve near-perfect scores in theory exams, and they regularly earn “Excellent” ratings in technique, performance, and sight-reading. My teaching approach includes personalized strategies that ensure students achieve their highest potential, often skipping levels and receiving Honor Certificates. Whatever your musical goals may be, I am committed to helping you achieve them with passion and precision.
EXPERIENCE
I’ve consistently taught students in my home studio and at the Young Virtuoso Music Academy over decades. I firmly believe that regular, structured practice is essential for younger students, as it fosters steady progress and helps cultivate a genuine love for the piano. Encouraging discipline while ensuring lessons remain enjoyable is a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy. I incorporate a blend of classical repertoire and modern music into lessons, as this balance keeps students engaged and motivated to practice. If my students aren’t enjoying their lessons, I feel I’m not doing my job effectively! I also emphasize creativity, encouraging students to compose their own original pieces, alongside preparing for competitions and recitals. These experiences give them a sense of accomplishment and inspire them to continue learning. I am always excited to welcome new students of all ages and skill levels, tailoring my approach to meet each individual's needs and goals.
METHODS USED
I am an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher who believes that learning music requires professional guidance to shape not only skills but also the tastes and values of young learners. I connect with my students on a personal level by understanding their interests, challenges, and strengths, fostering a supportive environment where they feel seen and heard. Music lessons are not just about mastering technique—they are about cultivating character, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to growth. I encourage a growth mindset by showing students that mistakes are an essential part of learning. Effort and progress are celebrated with genuine enthusiasm, reinforcing the idea that success is a journey, not just a destination. To make learning engaging, I incorporate humor, clever jokes, and metaphors that bring musical concepts to life. By using vivid associations and connecting music to stories and real-world experiences, I help students grasp the deeper meaning behind the notes. Music is a powerful tool for personal growth, influencing emotional resilience and intellectual development. I inspire my students to question, analyze, and apply their knowledge of music to the world around them. Whether lessons are online or in person, I encourage public performances, even informal ones for family and friends, as these experiences build confidence and provide a sense of accomplishment. Above all, I believe that music has the power to bring profound joy, connect people emotionally, and uplift their spirits. By teaching music methodically, I help my students achieve meaningful accomplishments while fostering a deep appreciation for the transformative power of music.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing brings me more joy than watching my students develop a genuine passion for music while growing both personally and professionally. I believe that every student learns in their own unique way, so I ensure that each progresses at a pace that suits them best. To support this, I set realistic, personalized goals during each lesson, ensuring that progress feels both achievable and rewarding. Celebrating every accomplishment—no matter how small—fuels their motivation, sparking excitement and a desire to keep learning. By understanding each student's individual interests and inspirations, I am able to tailor my instruction to meet their specific needs. Whether a student is captivated by classical masterpieces or enjoys exploring modern compositions, I adapt my teaching to keep them engaged and inspired. My approach blends structure with flexibility, nurturing both skill development and a lifelong love for music.
