I am currently attending the Hartt School at University of Hartford pursuing my masters in piano pedagogy. I have been teaching piano for the past three years and absolutely love working with students of all ages and levels. I have had the opportunity to perform multiple times with the University of Central Florida orchestra, as well as in solo, chamber and New Music Ensemble settings. I have been lucky to be influenced by many great music teachers throughout my childhood and know the importance of fostering an interest and a safe place for students to express themselves through music.
My teaching experience begins during the second year of my undergrad at UCF. I began teaching privately students who ranged in ages from 4 to 65. Encouraging regular practice and incorporating parent involvement are the best ways I feel to keep a younger student on track. As well as tailoring a plan that fits each students’ needs. Encorporating a mixture of genres and allowing the student to feel that they can play the music they are interested in will help to fuel a passion for music in the student. I am always excited to meet with new students and share my love for music with them.
For young beginning students (usually ages 5-7) I would begin with the Hal Leonard Piano Lessons Book series. After I feel that the student can properly read music and understand fundamentals of the piano I will begin to incorporate other methods such as Piano Adventures and the Bastien series. When the student gets older they will begin learning solo repertoire that is deemed appropriate as well as scales and other rudimentary exercises. An adult student would have a unique approach depending on the musical background and understanding of basic concepts, as well as what their ultimate goal is. Although, overall I believe that a strong base of reading music is imperative to each and every student.
Before I began teaching I was convinced that it wasn’t for me. I thought my passion for music was best conveyed through performance. But after my first students gave their recital, I was overcome with a feeling that I could not replicate simply through my own performance. Each and every student is unique and therefore has their own set of goals and accomplishments to achieve and I am always thrilled when I feel that I have played a small role in that process. Now I couldn’t imagine my life without teaching and I believe it is truly the most rewarding profession one can have.
