BM, Howard University, Music Therapy (in progress)
My first passion has always and will always be music. I have been involved in music performance all my life, from singing in church at the age of four to being in performing arts magnet programs at Hyattsville Middle School and Suitland High School. I formed a love for psychology later in life. Fortunately, I have found a field of study that will allow me to pursue both at once, music therapy. Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Music Therapy at Howard University, with intentions of becoming a board certified Music Therapist.
I have been teaching private and group music lessons in voice, piano, and guitar since 2012. Lessons were typically held at the students home, various schools, and other rehearsal spaces. I have taught individuals from the age of 3 and up, as well as skill levels from beginner to more advanced skills.
My methods of teaching are primarily based on the individual. Within the first lesson, I make an assessment of the individuals’ musical abilities, and document the genres of music that interests the student. I then create a curriculum based on that assessment, which includes music theory, building repertoire (including music that interests the student), and music history/literature. I also encourage the student to engage in music competitions/auditions and student recitals.
Building rapport is vital in a student-teacher relationship. I encourage the student to make personal goals of progress in addition to the goals I have set for them. I give the student constructive feedback on progress and acknowledge accomplishments. I try keeping an inspirational and open-ended environment for exploration, for music making is fun! I love contributing to the education and growth of fellow musicians.
Darius is very professional and things flowed very smoothly the very first meeting. My daughter felt comfortable and was really engaged in the lesson. I highly recommend him as a voice or piano instructor.
