I'm Darrell! I've been playing music professionally for 15 years and teaching for 10. I absolutely love the blues and anything with SOUL. I studied science and music at Saginaw Valley State University, and work as a Med Tech locally. I have a passion for music that I feel I have to share.
In 6th grade I picked up trombone, and loved it. By the time I was in 9th grade I had taught myself the basics of all the other band brass instruments, and decided to tackle bass. After a few months I decided I needed more strings to play with and purchased an electric guitar. My life changed that day. Every day after that for the next 4 years I practiced the guitar. By the time I graduated high school I was playing lead guitar in a cover band, and getting some attention in the local music scene.
That was about 10 years ago, and since then I have established a beautiful little family, with my wife, Ashley, who gave birth to our daughter, Charlotte on New Years Eve 2017. Not to mention, played many, many shows.
I started teaching guitar at about 16, and have always maintained a studio of at least a couple students. I also offered assistance in the local band classes in order to improve my chops on my alternate instruments. I've played with several local bands, played musicals for local and regional theater groups, and was the house band leader for the Williamsburg Dinner Theater for 4 years. By my best estimation, I have played well over 1000 shows (probably closer to 1200), and that number continues to grow as I develop my band, the Darrell Boger Band.
I like to keep students engaged, giving them practical exercises and studies that lead to a goal that we establish together. I believe that setting and meeting performance goals is one sure-fire way to ensure independent study and keep our lessons progressing. I use different method books for beginners depending on age and in which direction they intend on pursuing. All lessons and materials are customized to students' preferences and tastes. My primary focus for new students are mechanical and notation/theory fundamentals.
My drive to teach comes from students' learning. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a breakthrough in a tough passage, or an "ah-ha" moment when discussing theory. Music is so much more than strings on a fretboard, notes on a page, or harmonies that reach your ear. Music is therapy, it is education, it is freedom, and above all, it is beautiful. With this mindset, we look at the larger picture to assess where we fit in the sonic spectrum. We talk about parts and arrangements, instrumentation and interpretation. And everything in between!
