Hi! My name is Darrin, I've been playing guitar, mainly as a hobby, for over 40 years. I have been in bands for most of that time and have played 100s of gigs. My experience spans a diverse musical mix. Acoustic/electric. Covers/originals. Oldies, rock, pop, punk, heavy metal, blues, classical and a little country. I have taught off and on for about 5 years and love to see my students experience the joy of learning and playing music. I have always felt that music should be fun and not something viewed as a chore. I love learning new songs, techniques and styles on guitar and hope my students can also feel that passion.
I have been playing guitar for over 40 years. I am well versed in mant different styles and techniques. I believe that playing guitar is an ongoing, never-ending learning experience. I have learned many things from playing with other musicians either with a band or when just jamming with other guitarists. I have taught private lessons on and off for about 5 years to children and adults. Because music is an ongoing learning experience, many times I also become teacher when playing with less experienced musicians. In additiion to my teaching guitar, I have also been a trainer in my professional office careers.
For beginning students, I typically start with teaching the parts of the guitar and the string names. I then progress to the notes on each string and introduce some basic exercises for hand coordination. We can then progress through scales and chords and touching on some music theory. For more experienced players, learning songs and different techiques is beneficial. Always with an eye towards advancing some theory and introducing students to new ideas. Depending on whether the student's goal is to play live, I like to throw in some fun guitar tricks in for showmanship.
My teaching style is to keep things fun and stress free. I really like to listen to what the student wants to get out of the lessons. Some might be more interested in theory and technique while other's goals might be more interested in learning songs to get out and play. I also like to introduce students to new things that can help in advancing their skills and knowledge. Each student is an individual and advances at their own pace. I like to keep the lessons interesting with doing some fun exercises as opposed to a strict formal lesson plan.
