Hello! My name is pronounced as if you saw the "dawn" in the morning and became so happy you said "yay!" (dawn-yay). I especially enjoy teaching music theory, composition, improvisation and transcription (playing by ear). I come from a family of musicians and started taking lessons at an early age. I performed multiple instruments in school bands from elementary days through college. In high school, I volunteered playing piano every Sunday at a local convalescent and rehabilitation center. The Afro-cuban jazz ensemble at San Francisco State University was a highlight of my experience as a performing musician. Nowadays I spent my time teaching students, managing music composition projects, picking up music gigs, taking classes at Berklee School of Music Online, and taking care of family. I am focused on composing music to be synchronized to film. Jazz piano is an integral part of my musical personality and voice.
I started teaching private lessons for piano and electric bass my Junior year of high school, in 2015. I would drive to student's homes and a few students came to my mother's home for sessions. In 2017 I started teaching at a local music studio called Live Music Center. They referred me piano, bass and guitar students. I taught here while attending college at San Francisco State University as a Piano Performance Music BA with concentration in Jazz. In 2020 I quit my full-time security job in San Francisco to start my own virtual music academy from home. Since, I have been teaching 20-40 students a week how to play their favorite songs on piano, bass, ukulele, guitar, drums, GarageBand and Logic Pro X. I hosted a 2021 Virtual Zoom Recital where students participated by sending in video clips of themselves performing their songs. I spliced it together into one long video and uploaded to YouTube for participants, family and friends to watch and support. This was a blast and I look forward to this year's recital!
I have had the most success in working with students who listen to a lot of music in their spare time. The nature of my teaching style is to teach music as a language. The best way to learn a new language is to listen and repeat, trial and errors. Considering the variety in my music background, I meet the student where they are and guide them to their goals. I encourage students to improvise and explore creativity. I teach music as if the student is a kid playing in a park learning a new game from another kid. I enjoy teaching music theory. For students who are interested in music theory I take them through the story of music, from fundamental blocks like notes, intervals, and chords, to complex concepts like chord progressions, song form and reharmonization.
My teaching style is very patient. I encourage my students to be patient with themselves as learning music is a life long journey. I encourage students to practice for at least 5 minutes everyday. I believe this allows them the chance to at least get their hands on their instrument. Often times once we get our hands on our instrument we end up staying their longer than we intended. I believe it is important to leave our instrument feeling good. I enjoy helping students realized that all of the complex music they want to learn can be broken down into simple pieces.
Daunye Is the most patient and encouraging instructor ever! He teaches at whatever pace you are comfortable with and is very flexible with scheduling. This is ideal for someone like me who works a ton and is now a mommy! He is the best and affordable!
Music teacher extraordinaire! Daunye LOVES music, you can feel it every lesson. I wanted a teacher that could quickly understand where my knowledge lay and help me reach my specific musical goals. His ability to take a non-linear approach to music is not traditional in the best sense of the word. We've spent lessons doing so much talking about music and it has helped build our rapport more than any other music teacher I've had. He feels like a true mentor and I'm so grateful.
I've been going to Danyue for a couple years now and he is a great teacher! He is quiet thorough and patient when he is giving his lessons, and he will always make time whenever you can't make it to a lesson either. Danyue is very passionate in what he does and has a great love for music, I highly recommend!
Daunye has been more than a piano teacher to my son, he has been a mentor and a great role model. Daunye has an incredible ear for music, he was able to teach my son to play his favorite songs from the radio; "Sunflower" from Post Malone, "A Dream", for Debarge, and many great pop songs. Lessons were never boring for my son, in fact he was always eager to work with Daunye. He had a great way to incorporate traditional instructions to a fun up to date lessons. Really enjoyed the foundation he established for my son.
Daunye is a fantastic music teacher. He has been teaching me bass guitar and my 12 year old son piano. We love the lessons and working with him. Prior to joining him, my son didn’t like piano lessons anymore but now he looks forward to them. He writes down new songs to play and has grown so much. Daunye is very patient and knowledgeable and we look forward to continuing to learn under his guidance for years to come.
Hands down the best teacher. He’s patient, flexible and extremely helpful!
I am extremely proud of this young man. Daunye is So knowledgeable of his art and is a great music teacher. He is very kind and patient. I have only had a few piano lessons but have learned so much! His way of teaching is simple and fun. The qualities he shows makes you want to learn more. I highly recommend him as a piano or any other instrument teacher.
Daunye has always been supportive of my music journey and takes time to answer all of my technical questions about theory and music notation. He loves teaching his students how to play their favorite songs and as an educator I know how important it is to connect your student's learning with their interests. I love being connected with Daunye and seeing him grow as a teacher every day.
I absolutely love studying with Daunye. I had never taken a lesson before and really appreciated him balancing what I would consider tried-and-true learning methods with the context of music theory, so I could understand why (not just the how) of music. I would highly recommend working with him!
I worked with Daunye for about 2 years and he is incredible. He makes music fun and accessible in a way that always had me excited for my lesson and excited to sit down at the keyboard. Daunye was able to tailor his lessons to meet me at my level. He is extremely talented and is a pleasure to work with. Highly recommend for students of all skills and ages!
Daunye is a true gem and a one of kind music teacher. Throughout the pandemic - he brought light to our day with the music he taught us. He has helped our family enjoy playing music together and we learned songs that we love to play each lesson. I remember playing music as a kid - I never liked practicing piano cause I didn't connect with the music and so much emphasis was put on music theory. The way he teaches though, makes you want to keep playing because you want to, not cause you have to. Our kids started virtual music lessons with him at 5 & 7 yrs old. As a mom, I also like the convenience of not having to drive somewhere for the lesson & the flexibility of having our lesson at home from week to week. His auditory approach to composing music and the way he caters to each students? music ability is unique and next level. He is incredibly talented, patient, honest and flexible with scheduling. I highly, highly recommend him!
Daunye did more for my progression as a keyboardist in our 9 months of lessons than any other form of instruction I've done. His focus on his students priorities really helps keep you engaged with what is important to you personally. He introduced me to concepts of interval training and ear training that have made me much more confident improvisational player. I owe much of my confidence in playing in multiple bands to our time spent helping me understanding reading and interpreting lead sheets! Can't recommend highly enough!
Daunye has been my son’s piano teacher for 3 years now and he is very knowledgeable, brilliant, and dedicated, to what he does.
Daunye is an old Jazz soul performing in the modern day - and he's an AMAZING teacher. He has taught 3 of my kids a combination of instruments: Piano, electric bass, electric guitar. Before Daunye, they were playing music by the book and simply reading the notes... After Daunye, they've found their personal voice with the instrument and learned how to play from both books and sound. Now, they play with far more character and passion - and enjoy Daunye's friendly demeanor. Teaching virtually has it's benefits, too - you can get recordings of each practice so you have a reference for practice time.
Daunye is a wonderful teacher. He is very thorough with his teaching, and goes in-depth when need be. I have been taking piano lessons with him for over 3-4 years, and have learned/applied a lot of what he has taught me to help me improve. He is highly educated, and super passionate about his work. He is also greatly flexible with lesson times, and is overall a great person. 10/10 will recommend.
Our teenage daughter has been studying piano over Zoom with Daunye for maybe a year now. He is a wonderful teacher, he keeps her motivated and excited about her music, she is making good progress and she looks forward to working with him every week. We cannot recommend Daunye highly enough! Don't hesitate.
I have been learning acoustic guitar with Daunye for a couple of months. As far as I can tell, Daunye is a very professional teacher, he is willing to tailor lessons based on the level and interests of his students, and his skills and knowledge can easily cover beginner to intermediate students like me. Also, because he masters multiple instruments, his explanations using guitar and piano can easily relate to each other and help me improve. Partly because of that, I am encouraged to start my piano learning recently as well. Most of all, his enthusiasm and optimism are very touching, you can easily feel him as a nice person and his love of music and instruments. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to learn instruments, especially acoustic guitar and piano.
Our son has been learning piano from Daunye for over two years, and we are simply thrilled with the patience, kindness, enthusiasm, professionalism, excellent teaching skills, and knowledge that Daunye brings to each lesson. Our child loves taking piano lessons from Daunye, and it is a testament to how good of a teacher Daunye is that our son has learned so much even though he's not very diligent at practicing outside of class.
I've been taking piano + music lessons from Daunyé for over 2 years and I cannot speak highly enough of his teaching. We started with basic piano lessons and have since evolved to higher-level music theory and arrangement as I work on my own musical production. This encapsulates why Daunyé is an awesome music teacher: he evolves his teaching based on the needs and desires of the specific student he's engaging with. As an adult learner, it's been fun to direct my music education into the spaces that I'm passionate about and even more impressive that Daunyé can pivot as needed. He's knowledgeable, thoughtful, supportive, and patient in every lesson. I'm fortunate that I get to learn from Daunyé, as I know anyone that has that privilege will undoubtedly benefit. Thanks Daunyé!
Daunye is a gifted teacher for adults and children alike! He's taught my kids and encouraged their love and understanding of music. He also meets adults where they are at, encouraging exploration in a friendly and open way. He truly loves music and will help you to discover multiple aspects that you enjoy too.
