Awards:
2006 - Fairport High Schools Miles Davis award
Overview:
I started playing drums when I was 10 years old in my elementary school band. Quickly, I became hooked to practicing and getting better and growing as a musician. I also fell in love with music and it's healing abilities. As a teenager, I played in my high school concert band, jazz band and had my own rock bands outside of school. I was hungry for anything to make me a better drummer. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2010 with a degree in Music Business, I moved to New York City and started playing in bands and teaching drum lessons. Today, I play in bands in the city, produce and promote my own solo electronic music and teach students of all ages and skill levels. Working and growing with students has become something I love to do.
EXPERIENCE
I have over 10 years experience teaching drums and music production, which I began after moving to New York around 2010. I like to teach my students based on their needs, depending on age and speed of learning. I am very big in teaching deep fundamentals, such as snare drum rudiments and different drum grooves. The lessons need to be fun! I try to balance out 'fun' practicing and focus, goal-driven exercises, which includes learning the drum parts to music the student likes. I enjoy preparing middle school and high school students for NYSSMA, New York states music competition, and am very proud to say I've seen my students achieve great success. I'm excited to work with new students of all ages
METHODS USED
I like to start off teaching how to read very simple snare drum and drum set music. Basic snare drum rudiments like Flams and Paradiddles and basic rock beat drum patterns are a fun and engaging way to start learning. I use books as well as transcribe music myself to provide my students with a visual representation. This allows for a more clear communication once the drumming concepts become more challenging and complex. Playing along with music the student enjoys is one of the most fun things about drumming, which i try to do from day one. AC-DC's back in black is a great go-to first song. Overall, the lessons have to be fun and enjoyable while still being educational.
LESSON STYLE
Connection. I believe having a connection with the student is the most important factor. I strive to become close with all of my students. This way we can learn more efficiently while still having fun. I spend a small portion of lesson time getting to know my students and talking about what interests them. Sometimes, I'll take these interests and base the a lesson around it. While pushing the student to try new things, it's helpful to periodically take breaks and let the brain reset. I also like to inform the student of my plan with them. I want my students to know what were are currently working on and why, giving an example of something we are working towards like a beat or a specific song. This way there is always a reason for the lesson being taught.
