Grade 8 Classical Piano - Royal Schools of Music Jazz Classical Training - Piano - Philadelphia
I am a Classical trained Pianist with 14 years British Classical training in Piano, that got involved in performing modern day music. As a result I understand playing on stage as well as doing music studio work. I have performed and toured professionally around the world playing keyboard, percussion and guitar. I played trumpet in high school and college in the church band and the Temple University performance band. I know that I have the ability to teach and get my students from beginner stage to advance.
I started playing music more than 40 years ago. I taught the choir at my church for years, leading them in festivals and church performances. I have trained singers who wanted to perform in competitions,. I have taught children who wanted to play for fun as a music option and adults who wanted to improve their proficiency in piano. Teaching guitar has been mainly to band members who wanted more from both the guitar as well as the bass guitar. Teaching students to accomplish goals in music is fun because Practice makes permanent.
I generally try to understand the fundamentals as to where the student is at currently. The basics are always where we drill the most. Playing the fundamentals must become like second nature as all the advance stages of playing and performing would always be difficult. Besides having a good grasp on the fundamentals, it is always important to find out what the student is interested in and the direction emphasis that the student / student's parent wants to get to of music lessons. Goal setting as I said earlier is very important in music.
As rudimentary as it sounds scales and arpeggios make up a lot of the initial lessons as these form the proficiency and styling of any performance. It is from scales and arpeggios that you learn classical to jazz to pop. Having the speed and agility on the instrument is not just for finger muscle development or voice development but also for accuracy and definition in the performance. It may sound mundane but any area that a person performs music would get back to the root cause of playing scales and arpeggios
