I began singing solos in church when I was 6 years old. I picked up the guitar when I was 10. At Montevallo, my primary instrument was voice and piano was my secondary instrument. I've been teaching professionally since 1981 -- 37 years as of this writing. My students have gone on to be professionals themseleves, but many of them just enriched their lives with music. As a performer, I've sung and played guitar in churches, clubs, local television and at weddings, funerals and I've perfomed in musicals alongside Broadway star Rebecca Luker in college. I've also been a church choir director for 35 years in Birmingham, AL, where I still serve. I've taught in many settings. My current studio is in my home in Tullahoma, TN, convenient to Lynchburg, Manchester, Murfreesboro and even Huntsville, AL, which is only about an hour away for me, since I also teach in students' homes. I taught for many, many years in the Birmingham, AL metro area.
EXPERIENCE
I'm a lifelong teacher. I always knew teaching was what I wanted to do. My first guinea pig was my little brother, who's seven years younger than I. I've always been able to relate to all ages and all types of people. I've taught in a variety of settings: Schools, music stores and my own independent studio. I really enjoy seeing the light bulb go off in a student's head. I'm a very patient person, and that suits most students. If I have an exceptional student, I recognize that and push that student harder than I would someone else with limited potential. Everyone can learn a certain level of proficiency. I stress each student to "Have Fun!" Otherwise, what's the point?
METHODS USED
My philosophy is that everyone is musical to some degree and that anyone can be taught to play music. Not everyone can be taught the same way, however, and it takes a highly skilled, creative, intuitive and patient teacher to do that. I customize my teaching to the student. I use several different method books depending on the age, ability and learning style of the student. For guitar, I teach note-reading in standard notation so that the student can take what he learns to any other instrument later. I teach notes, chords, scales and basic music theory. Depending upon ability and interest, I teach improvisation and solo playing. At that point, I often add tablature since so much music is written in tab. For those who want to mostly play chords, I teach all types of rhythm accompaniments and fingerstyle.
LESSON STYLE
I can teach anyone, and I make the lessons fun. I go at your pace. I'm very patient and engaging. I've been doing this a long time, I love it, and I love seeing my students' excitement when the light bulb clicks on! My patient style suits most students, especially young beginners and adults. When I do have a student that shows exceptional promise, I recognize this and push them harder to realize their potential. Most of all, I always encourage my students to have fun. Otherwise, what's the point?
