I have been playing violin for 40 years since I started at the age of 6. I minored in music education and trained under members of the United States Marine Band and National Symphony Orchestra. I currently play in the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra. I used to play in community orchestras during high school and college levels. I also performed in quartets, chamber orchestras, duets, and other ensembles. I used to perform in violin recitals and violin competitions while growing up in the Washington DC areas.
I have taught violin for 5 years to beginners and intermediate level students. My youngest student was 4 and my oldest was 65. I have a lot of experience teaching beginner level but I also have experience teaching intermediate levels and some advanced levels as well. I have helped students prepare for orchestra auditions and for recitals. I mostly teach classical level repertoire to give my students a basic foundation of music. It is important for students to learn the classics first to prepare them for other forms of music later on.
I teach basic music theory and fundamental principles of basic and intermediate violin playing to establish a strong musical foundation early on. I use a variety of teaching methods as Suzuki and Mueller Rusch as my main teaching books. I also introduce some simple melodies found in other music instruction books as well. Or if my student wishes to learn a piece from another source, I am happy to teach it. I find that students who choose their own pieces to learn improve more better than selecting pieces for them.
I like interaction with my students so it’s more than just teaching but giving examples to real life since music applies to everyday life and various life situations. I try to encourage students to think of human emotions and feelings to express through music to be well rounded. I also like to introduce basic principles of musical expression and feeling in music to help students play with heart and soul. It is important to connect with this side in order for music to sound like music rather than sounds and a bunch of notes.
