ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
MM, New York University, Music Technology BA, University of South Alabama, Music Education
Awards:

1997 - Theodore Presser Award

Overview:
I love the learning process and to see students progress through the stages of learning an instrument. I taught myself to play the piano before I started formal lessons. I began playing the saxophone at the same time I took up the piano. I entered my undergraduate program in 1992, majoring in music education with the saxophone and piano as my principle instruments. During my studies at the University of South Alabama, a new program was started in MIDI and I attended an extra year to master digital audio. I graduated April 1997. During the course of my career, I have been a band director, music theory and history teacher, piano lab, computer music, general music teacher, choral director, and an accompanist. I toured with a jazz band and participated in piano competitions.
EXPERIENCE
I began playing piano for church choirs in my hometown. During my college years, my private lessons experience began when I would give pointers to my fellow music majors who had to pass piano proficiency as part of their degree requirement. Furthermore, I am from the school of thought of concentrated practice. I help students identify the length of time they can concentrate without exhausting their attention. I always want students to have in mind the goals they want to accomplish in taking lessons such as recitals, competitions, showcasing and/or enrichment. Moreover, I want students to make music apart of their daily lives either by listening or performing.
METHODS USED
For my beginning piano students, I emphasize the twelve major and minor scales with proper fingering, first one octave and then two octaves. These exercises strengthens fingers and create more familiarity with the keyboard. I use the book, Level 1 The Older Beginner Piano Course by James Bastien and the companion book, Musicianship for the Older Beginner. I have seen results when these books are used in tandem. The student increases in technique and start to master music theory simultaneously. For intermediate to advance students, I use the The Virtuoso Pianist by Hanon. This is a great method book that gives the fingers agility, eye-to-music tracking, and familiarity with the piano keyboard. I introduce solo piano repertoire at all levels depending on ability. I cover the music periods from the Renaissance to the Twentieth-century. I want students to have an enjoyable time from taking private lessons.
LESSON STYLE
I like to make sure the learning environment is stress free and nonthreatening. I believe the psychology of music is dynamic. My goal is to get teacher and student to always be sensitive to the affective attributes that music has on the listener and the performer. Music comes alive by the interpretation of the performer and the student has the power to transmit his or her passion on any particular piece of music. As the teacher, I am there to give the student the capacity to shine. Moreover, I will be the instructor that answers technical challenges, that help the student progress as a musician and become a life-long music lover.
