I am a dedicated and passionate teacher. My goal has been to bring the joy and motivation that I have experienced throughout throughout my professional life to my students. After studying Jazz & Contemporary Media at the Eastman School of Music I became a Musical Director and Lead Trumpet Player for Royal Caribbean, on their cruise ships. The trumpet has given me the opportunity to travel and perform all across the world, with many wonderful players from diverse backgrounds.
My teaching experience sates back to running trumpet sectionals (in Junior High & High School) for an All Star Jazz Band in my home town. When I was 16 I started teaching younger trumpet students as well. I descovered early on that I had a passion for directing and teaching. This stayed with me, and I always have incorporated education into my directing and leadership styles as a perormer. As a Musical Director for Royal Caribbean I would regularly have to teach an hour long show to my international band in under an hour and a half.I know that learning an instrument is hard work and that motivation is key to success. I want my students to be having fun and seing their progress weekly.
Fundimentals are so important with younger students as I want to make sure to wead out any bad habits early on. However, my goal is to get the Beginer student playing songs and pieces very quickly as to help keep them motivated. Every student is differant, and therfore I creat differant lesson plans for every student baised on what they need and what will help them have the most success. As the students get older, or are adults, they tend to have a musical area of focus and I help them develope that.
How I teach is directly linked to how I play, with passion and energy. I prefer to show, verse explain. It has been my experience, both teaching and learning, that it is easier to get results from the student by showing them the tone you want them to produce or the articulation you desire ect. This is why I only teach Trumpet, if I can't show you how, then I am not being true to the student. It is important for the student to feel a level of success at all times. Because of this, I like to set small and reachable goals that will alow the student to see their progress on a weekly level. Most importantly I seek to motivate the student, if they want to practice we are already half way there.
