David has had extensive private instruction from Michael Newman (Mannes College of Music, New York), Alice Artzt (Princeton, New Jersey) and Dr. Stephen Robinson (Stetson University, DeLand, Florida).
Overview:
David began studying the Spanish guitar at age 8 with Diego Corriente. During his teen years, he began playing electric guitar rock bands and intensified his studies in classical guitar with private instruction from virtuoso guitarist, Michael Newman (youngest classical guitarist to debut in Carnegie Hall). After being accepted to the prestigious Rutgers University - Mason Gross School of the Arts, David focused on performing with ensembles ranging from duos to quintets. He consistently strives to expand his horizons by collaborating with other musicians and exploring all musical genres including Brazilian jazz, fingerstyle folk/blues, Celtic/Irish music, English lute music, "gypsy" jazz and anything else that captivates his ear.
EXPERIENCE
David has taught several hundred students classical, acoustic and electric guitar over the past 25 years. Teaching environments have included school classrooms, music studios, and privates homes each presenting their own unique challenges. Some students have been very young children without any specific musical goals, while other students have been mature adults wanting to learn specific songs or techniques. Years of experience has lled David to conclude that initial musical goals often evolve over time and a minimal degree of commitment is essential to a positive learning experience.
METHODS USED
David does not use a "cookie-cutter" method because each and every student has different innate abilities as well as different musical goals. A teaching method must consider the student's time outside of his or her lesson to be effective. David listens to each student with great care to devise a plan which promotes musicality through inspiration. Conveying large amounts of information, even of the highest quality, is of little value if the student is not motivated to use what he or she has learned to create music. David continually adapts teaching methods to each student based upon observed musical results.
LESSON STYLE
David's style has been honed through decades of experience teaching beginner students. Patience and keen obseration skills are critical to being an effective music teacher. David believes teaching a student to become their own impartial witness is the key to success and encourages the use of technology to fascilitate the process. No other teacher provides the student with more access and support in between lessons, including video tutorials, audio samples, PDF files, etc...
