Overview:
I am a musician who believes that I am a better performer because I teach, and I am a better teacher because I perform. To me, playing the flute and teaching the flute go hand in hand as I have gained so many analytical skills that help me relate to student's musical struggles and I can help students develop solid problem-solving skills. I have studied and performed in five countries and have studied with numerous fine teachers. As a result, I have a huge database of information I can draw on in lessons to help my students improve. I earned a MM at the Longy School of Music where I studied with Marco Granados, and a BM from San Francisco State University.
EXPERIENCE
I have completed two pedagogy training programs. During my graduate studies at the Longy School of Music, I took a two semester sequence of pedagogy coursework which included teaching two high school students under the supervision of a Longy flute professor. I also participated in the Teacher Training Program at the Boston Flute Academy where I taught workshops to adults and junior high students on sight-reading and intonation, and masterclasses to advanced junior high and high school students. Through these experiences I learned that teaching gives me a great deal of positive energy and that I love watching others make improvements in their playing.
METHODS USED
For all of my new students, I gauge where they are at in their musical development and start to create a plan for them. I assess their strengths first and then go right into areas that need work. I work a lot on fundamentals such as breathing, sound development, and comfortable hand position so that students can use their bodies most efficiently in their music making. I also insist on students learning to develop musical ideas right from the start so they realize that playing the flute is not only about blowing air and pushing buttons.
LESSON STYLE
I believe in being very structured with young students, as children thrive on structure. I give precise weekly practice assignments and expect the parents to be involved with their child's practicing. For adults, I like to have them set the tone as to what they want to work on, as adults have goals in ways that children do not. I would ask an adult student why they they had come to study flute with me and listen to what they wanted. We would then go forward; for example, some adults may want to play a lot of duets, some may want lots of help with their vibrato, some may just want to play repertoire, etc.
