Attended Berklee College of Music from 2004 - 2006
Awards:
Winner of the 2008 The Boston Music Festival with Rosey's Rejects Band
Overview:
I started learning at the age of 11 and studied all through out high school. I studied with various local teachers after High School and met Mike Mangini in 1999 at a drum clinic. I was blown away with his expertise and was encouraged by him to learn jazz. I entered Berklee in 2004 where I met Rick Considine and studied with him for a year after he mentioned three of my favorite rock drummers in one sentence. I am still learning from the method that Mike taught me as his ideas "appear" in songs I transcribe. I have been playing in local clubs since I Was 21.
EXPERIENCE
I've been playing drums for 36 years and teaching for 14 and I love it! Studying with Mike Mangini was one of my biggest inspirations to date. I've been playing in clubs in and around the Boston area since I was 21 and I'm still doing it today. I have a basic, step by step book I've written called DRUM STUFF to get my students interested and playing songs / music as soon as possible. I work with the student's interests and focus on what their goals for playing are, keeping them motivated while having fun learning.
METHODS USED
I start every lesson with the first lesson from my book called DRUM STUFF. It's what I call Basic Beat # 1 and it is the foundation on ANY song in 4/4 timing. As the student progesses, we work on other lessons with the goal of playing songs from various publishing companies, music they may have from band or songs I have personally written out or that they may have heard on the radio. After that, I introduce them to the rudiments so that they become well rounded and ready to sight read. I want to challenge my students and also have fun during their lessons.
LESSON STYLE
I realize that every student learns at their own pace. I have a relaxed, patient style to fit any students' needs. I encourage daily practice, yet I understand that this may not always be possible. I never force a student to learn what they don't like and always ask what they would like to get out of learning the drums. I know how to get results and with a little faith, I will help the student achieve their goals. Whether it is learning one of their favorite songs or challenging them with a snare drum solo, I know how to get them there!
