Overview:
I am versatile and passionate percussionist and drummer who has extensive experience with all percussion instruments and styles. I graduated from California State University Northridge with Bachelors and Masters degrees in percussion performance. I have toured to multiple locations in the United States in addition to performing in several amazing venues such as Chicago Symphony Hall, The Valley Performing Arts Center, and Royce Hall. I have also had the privilege of marching in the 2012 Rose Parade as a snare drummer in the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Honor Band. I have taught drumline and concert band percussion sections for the past four years and have taught percussion and drum set to several private students.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching when I was halfway through college. I began teaching private students as well as drumlines at local high schools. I focus heavily on technique and self-expression in order to make music making as engaging and as fun as possible! I also incorporate real life scenarios into my lessons in order to better prepare my students for what they might encounter in live musical situations. I highly encourage my students to practice every day for a minimum of 20 minutes in order to retain information as well as their technique.
METHODS USED
I adapt my teaching style to the unique needs of each individual student. If a student needs to go at a particular pace in order to truly master a concept, I will never rush them through it in order to meet any deadline. I want to make sure each student has an extremely solid foundation in their fundamental technique so that they can expand their capabilities. I emphasize listening abilities in addition to sheet music reading because I believe a good musician needs to have both skills. Ultimately, my goal is to have all my students become highly self-aware so that they are able to eventually teach themselves when they are done studying with me.
LESSON STYLE
I enjoy giving my students control over their own learning process at times. This means that I will sometimes provide them choices within the context of what I am trying to teach them. I also make lessons fun by performing duets with students to take a break from the daily material. I also emphasize site-reading in every lesson to develop this much-neglected skill. All of these techniques are designed to keep the student mentally engaged because it is only then that they will truly be learning as much as possible.
