I have been involved in the music industry as a commercial session vocalist, demo singer, and vocal coach for over 35 years. In 1988 I received my associates degree in music performance from Augusta State College, and then moved out west to focus on a career in music. During the 1990’s as a commercial session vocalist, I was fortunate to have my voice featured on national network campaigns for ABC, NBC and CBS, as well as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Wheel Of Fortune. In 1998, I moved to Nashville and became a professional demo singer and background vocalist for many of Nashville’s top music publishing companies. I continued as a top background and demo singer during the early to mid 2000s and moved into vocal producing and arranging. When I am not coaching voice, I currently contract and produce recording projects for aspiring singers and artists.
My love affair with coaching began in the mid-1990s after meeting and working with one of the nations top vocal coaches, Seth Riggs. His method of coaching completely changed the way I used my voice; making it more efficient, focused and powerful. I was hooked from the very first lesson and have been coaching variations of the speech level singing method ever since. Another facet of my coaching is in the area of style. Being a professional session vocalist has really helped me relate to my students in a very authentic and powerful way. Because I am well-versed in several styles and genres of music, I am able to relate not just on a technical level with my clients, but also in the areas of song interpretation and artistic direction. I absolutely love sewing into the lives of my singers and artists and helping them find their musical identity!
My method of coaching focuses on three main areas: diaphragmatic breathing, vocal fold alignment, and proper laryngeal positioning. These three areas have a direct impact on tone quality, placement and ease of transition from chest voice to mix voice. The first few lessons with a new student always begins with good diaphragmatic breathing exercises combined with edging techniques for fold alignment up to the first vocal bridge. Once the student feels comfortable in both of those areas, I then combine those areas with proper larynx positioning to seamlessly navigate their first vocal bridge! Each one of my students has their unique way of approaching technique, so I adapt my method to their learning style. The art of coaching is not simply disseminating good technical information, but rather understanding how a student learns and structure a lesson plan they will understand and progress with!
My teaching style is very simple: meet the individual where they are. I really enjoy getting to know my students and learning about their experiences with music and singing. Every student I coach has a very unique perspective so my job is to be as pliable and empathetic as possible. The method that I coach yields incredible results but is definitely not a “one size fits all” kind of experience for for my clients. It is therefore, very important that I listen to what they have to say. Being a good listener enables me to structure a systematic training program based on the students level of experience and unique learning style. In closing; a good coach, in my humble opinion, has the ability to not only disseminate information in an easy to understand format, but also have a high level of intuition that only comes with an unabashed passion for sewing into the life of the human being sitting in front of them. Educate-Inspire-Empower: this is what I strive to do in every lesson I coach.
