Overview:
I'm a young musician, and I have a strong believe in the importance of all forms of artistic expression. Above all, I understand that music, of all art forms, is integral to social and personal development. I graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a BA in music in vocal performance in 2013, and in 2012, I had the amazing experience of studying under the renowned soprano, Delia Surratt, in Rome. In school, I also completed a theatre minor and was the musical director of my a cappella group, so I am familiar with many styles of singing. I aspire to compose music for theatre and film, as well as to continue teaching and performing. I am also proficient in Italian and Spanish, and German pronunciation.
EXPERIENCE
I found myself teaching at a very young age, being hired as the accompanist for the Dominican High School Summer Theatre Camp. These campers ranged in age from 5-14. I have accompanied for the past six summers, and I eventually held the title of Lead Music Teacher. At school in Chicago, I did some vocal coaching of my peers. I have experience in teaching and coaching both musical theatre repertoire and classical repertoire. I also have composed pieces of music for concerts, theatre, and personal enjoyment, and would love to encourage students to pursue their own music, with which I can offer guidance and theory lessons.
METHODS USED
Teaching voice is something that I believe requires highly personalized lesson plans, and so there are books for which to acquire basic theory, note-reading, and sight-singing, but usually, lessons must be repertoire based, and conceptual. Students usually have an idea of certain songs they would like to learn, and I believe it is very important to enable them to sing what they like to sing. However, I will also suggest repertoire that they are unfamiliar with, or initially uncomfortable with to broaden their musical knowledge and appreciation, and also to address certain skill sets. Singing should always be enjoyable, and never a burden. It is one of the most natural and spontaneous forms of expression; we do it all the time.
LESSON STYLE
I love it when students discover something about music, their instrument, or themselves all on their own. I have a passion for learning and I try to instill in my students a similar love of simply uncovering new ideas. Every student is different, but everyone loves to feel a sense of accomplishment, so I set goals for my students that they can easily reach with a little focus and hard work from both of us. I want to get to know each and every one of my students because how else can I instruct them in music, a medium that speaks from our very souls? A music teacher's relationship with his or her students is a very different one than say, a math teacher, because a music student needs to share so much more than just facts, they learn how to open up, and express themselves through art, so they need to feel as comfortable as possible.
