Overview:
I am a passionate musician and performer that loves sharing the gift of music to students of all ages. Through progressive knowledge of technique, repertoire, and performing practices, I believe that every student can achieve success at the keyboard. I have been teaching piano, voice, organ, and choir for over 20 years, both privately and publicly. My students have gone on to major in music in college and to enjoy a lifelong passion for musicmaking. I actively perform with school choir and band programs, churches, and I sing with the Dallas Symphony Chorus. It is my firm belief that performing enhances a student's ability and growth and development.
EXPERIENCE
As stated, I have taught students of all ages, from pre-K to adults. I first began teaching while I was in college and have taught ever since. While most of my career has been spent teaching privately in fine arts academies and in students' homes, for the past 7 years I have taught high school choir in Keller ISD. I love to see my students succeed and have those "aha!" moments when their individual practice begins to pay off. Through failure and success, every moment is shared and felt as a teacher and a student.
METHODS USED
In order to succeed at the keyboard, a student's technique must be ahead of their literature. This is why I use a well-developed system of technical exercises that are easy to understand and implement that allows the student to quickly gain mastery of the instrument. These techniques were thoroughly developed and taught by my mentor, Dr. Jill Sprenger, and I have seen students of all types succeed with them. I also use a self-paced program of theory skills and ear-training exercises that complement the wide variety of literature that excites each student.
LESSON STYLE
I approach each student knowing that every student is unique and so is their learning style. While the information that is delivered to each student remains the same, the manner in which I teach each student varies widely. I try to foster the best student-teacher relationship possible in order to gain the confidence and trust of both the student and their families. I also have much experience teaching students with unique characteristics such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's, etc. Learning to play an instrument is a team effort, and I work to facilitate the smooth interaction between students and their families as they learn to incorporate new routines into their daily lives.
