I am an extremely passionate saxophonist, musician, and teacher. I love sharing all that I have learned about the saxophone with students and helping them to grow in their journey with both the saxophone and music. I am from the San Francisco Bay Area, where I received both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Saxophone performance from San Jose State University. In 2022, I moved to New York City to work towards my Doctorate at the Manhattan School of Music. I have had the pleasure to begin actively performing and teaching in New York over the past year.
I began teaching lessons privately in college, and gained significant experience teaching online through the Covid shut down. My favorite aspect of teaching is sharing my love of the saxophone with my students, and passing on knowledge about the instrument that is not widely known or available. I have taught saxophone lessons at several music studios in both California and New York, as well as my own independent students. I also have an active performing career as a soloist, chamber musician, and large ensemble player. I am currently the alto saxophonist for the award-winning zeros saxophone quartet.
I believe in a very organic and intuitive approach to teaching/learning the saxophone. Of course, my methods will be very different depending on the age group and level of experience each student has, but many of my core principles with remain the same. One of my beliefs as a teacher of the saxophone, is that it is equally as important to foster musicality as it is master technique. Many teachers spend a disproportionate amount of time of technique, and the end result is a very robotic player. My goal is always to produce a well rounded player/performer.
It is very important to me that each student is having fun, and enjoying the process of learning the saxophone. Students will always have the opportunity to bring their own music/projects into our lessons, in addition to the work we will do on the fundamentals, technique, tone production, etc. We will cover all areas of the saxophone, and music to produce a highly educated musician and performer. With an understanding of a students level, goals, and passions, I will be able to formulate a plan for the student to be proficient in all areas of the instrument.
