Hello! My name is David, I'm Brazilian and I've been playing guitar since I was 11 years old. I am a composer, guitarist, singer and I was a member of Cadillac Dinossauros, a Brazilian rock band for 16 years. During this period I developed an authentic way of playing as well as stage techniques. At the same time, I also taught guitar as an independent teacher for 6 years. Besides Rock, my biggest influences are Soul and Funk music, Jazz and of course, Brazilian music. Despite not having academic training in music, I believe that my years of experience playing and teaching can lead you to develop as an instrumentalist and also as an artist, if that is your intention.
My experience as a teacher covers teaching guitar to beginners and intermediate level children and adults. As a private teacher, I usually go to the student's preferred location to teach. Here in America, I also worked as a teacher's aide at Sterling Elementary School in Tooele-UT. This experience gave me even more ease in teaching children, who naturally need a very attentive and patient approach. I believe that my role as a teacher is for the student to learn to play the instrument in an easy, pleasant and intuitive way, based on theoretical and practical learning in an combined way.
I believe that the best way to learn how to play is to play what you like to listen to. Practicing the repertoire is as important as the mechanical and technical practices of the instrument. Based on this, I often try to identify the techniques used in the songs that the student likes and whenever possible, we work on the technical part applied to a given song. This way, studying becomes more enjoyable and dynamic. Of course, the mechanical study of scales, chords, arpeggios and reading cannot be left aside and they must have space during the lessons. But it is in creative studies, such as repertoire, that the student develops their musical perception and can apply the theoretical part in a practical way.
My teaching style is what I call allied teaching. Even though we need to study the mathematics of music, so to speak, we cannot forget that music is art and art is not exact. Music has an infinite number of paths to offer you and even if you know all the scales that exist, if you don't know how to apply them in a harmonious and spontaneous way you will be stuck in the same place. It's like a water mill without water, where the entire structure is there, ready to be used, however, without the water, which in this case would be the feeling, the soul and the passion, it cannot run. We need to fill our mill with water, combine knowledge so that our music flows and awakens feelings in people.
