I am a classically trained musician with both a Bachelor and Master's degree from Indiana University School of Music. In addition, I was awarded a Ph.D. in Music Composition/Theory and Instrumental Music Education from the Union Institute and University in Cincinnati. (1990) I have been a professional musician and educator for more than 25 years. I have recorded and produced a cd which was released in 2011. A second CD is in the works and will be released on the World Oceans label.
I teach bin my home studio or at the student's home.My teaching experience spans over 25 years and includes private instruction in piano, organ, violin, viola and composition. As an experienced classroom teacher, I have worked as an elementary/middle school teacher and 12 years teaching as an adjunct professor in several colleges and universities. The youngest student in my studio was 6 six years old, while the oldest was 83. I do encourage a regular practice routine for all my students and work to inspire them to move to the next level as needed.
For beginning piano students, I tend to use the Alfred method books 1-3, then graduate to Hanon "the virtuoso pianist" I stress the "fundamentals" while adding solo repertory for enjoyment and solo playing. Simple piano pieces keep the lessons fun for beginners, while classical works are encouraged for intermediate and advanced students. For violin and viola, one of my choices is "All for Strings". I do add Mueller-Rusch books after the first year, and some solo pieces from the Suzuki methods. Again, I stress the fundamentals of correct bowing, posture and regular practice of scales and etudes.
As students progress at his/her own pace I try to keep them moving forward with realistic goals and encouragement. One important consideration I keep in mind is choosing the right music for each student according to developing skill levels. If the music is to easy, a student could become bored and unchallenged. Should the music become to difficult too soon, the student may become discouraged. Having said that, I will allow the student to try some "challenging" music, and allow them to progress and work up to a new level of playing.
Wonderful, wonderful teacher. Patient and so great at communication. Very happy we found him
