I play several instruments and love to play the saxophone. I played saxophone for a year at Oregon State University in the Jazz Combo 1988-89. I took a long 20 year break from music to be a mental health therapist. I have had more time in the past couple of years and have picked up several instruments to heal after recalling past trauma. I find music an excellent way to express my feelings and have been participating in local music jams throughout Oregon. I broadcast my music performances live on Periscope TV and have International fans. I love singing but am very shy about it unless I am encouraged. I have a 17 year old granddaughter who writes and sings and performs very well on several instruments and a 6 year old daughter. I have been teaching them both music since they were born.
I have been a mental health therapist since 1992 when I graduated from college. I have owned my own private practice since 2000 to provide mental health treatment, consultation and training to children and families. I have experience teaching children many skill sets under difficult circumstances. I am trained to help children with behavioral issues and developmental delays develop ways to learn even if they have a history of challenges working with an adult. I have training in discerning children's learning styles and helping them express through music. I have used music through the course of play therapy for over 20 years.
I like to assess the child's musical interests quickly to determine the best approach to learning. Children all have different learning styles and I like to individualize the teaching approach to maximize success. I think it is important to engage the child and the parents together at the start to determine the goal of the lessons. I like to help children determine the best way for them get better through creative ways of practicing. I am big fan of jamming and think it is a great way to learn music. It is also a way for the whole family to have fun together and can help develop a positive social activity.
I am skilled at reading a student's attributes and building upon their strengths. I like to take the child's interests into consideration when determining the best approach. I believe that there are many avenues to learning music and realize that charts, scales and other traditional approaches may not work everyone especially for someone who senses music in colors or some other unique manner. I have a calm and professional manner while still being fun. I am open to hearing the child's ideas but set firm limits and take a mentoring leadership role in a way that may transfer to other adults in the child's life. Parents and other caregivers are always welcome to attend the lesson anytime they would like.
