Executive Director Music School MN. Orchestra participant US and Austria Scholarship recipient U. of Vienna (Hochschule Musik) Set up after school music lessons for elementary school, summer camp programs for music and theater MN. Bilingual German and English
My musical life has been extraordinary. Born in Mpls. MN, I attended the Aspen Musical Festival before my departure to Vienna Austria for Master studies in Violin/viola and piano. Scholarship intended for one year ended up a 25 year tenure, teaching, performing in Vienna and raising a family. I returned to the US to become executive director of a music school in MN. I was able to start new after school music programs for elementary schools throughout the district, start an orchestra program and open a theater program for kids. This was done with Park and recreation in the St. Paul area. I learned to love what I do through nurturing mentors and professional artists who were ambassadors for their own countries. I share what I love to do and what I have learned throughout the years.
My experiences teaching are fundamentally positive in nature. I know each student is different and unique in his or her way. I also teach lessons in German and/or English as needed. Setting a goal at the first lesson is important to me. I provide recitals twice a year for both strings and piano. For piano I offer a grand piano sent back from Vienna, refurbished and beautiful in tone. For violin, I am able to offer instruments from 1/8 to 3/4 sizes as needed. My student of all ages and abilities accomplish successful training and stay motivated through orchestra and enjoy the company of others interested in what they are doing. Sometimes the MYS or the Greater Twin Cities Youth Orchestra - adults often in church orchestra or community offerings.
I am familiar with all teaching methods, both American and European. I use the combination of both. In general I teach scales, reading music, learning to sight read, metronme training, along with muscle development and strengthening. I teach all styles of music for both strings and piano and have had very successful students young and old. Specifically for violin, I teach the Dounis method for more advanced students preparing for auditions, scholarships etc. For piano I teach everything I can remember from my prof. in Vienna, Dr. Hinterhofer and my favorite mentor, Alfred Brendel. Other secrets I share with my students only. Lessons are inspiring and I love what I do.
My style of teaching is different for each student. After meeting the student, I suggest setting a goal, working towards that goal for 4 -6 weeks - after which an assessment is made by me to determine how best to continue. For the younger student I often demonstrate, or play with them. Encouraging recital participation, finding the right performance piece helps me determine what inspires the student, young or old. Negativity in lessons is not acceptable and never happens with me as your teacher.
