A.S. San Bernardino Valley College, Guitar, Piano and Trumpet
2012 Honors student SBVC
I am a caring and compassionate instructor that prefers students on a basic to intermediate level where I can actually give them the true appreciation and understanding for success with music. I have been playing trumpet since 5th grade, guitar since I was 14, and I started piano with my own player piano as I was growing up. With me you will come to think of learning music as a new language, fun, yet challenging, rewarding yet not as difficult as one would imagine. You may get tired of me saying "Practice! Practice! Practice!" but you will come to learn as I did, you reap what you SOW. Hang in there! With me guiding you, you will become proficient in no time! I use Hal Leanorard or Alfred's Piano for my teaching materials, but am open to using yours if so desired. Of course, if you'd like suggestions as to what to get, then certainly we can advise you on the choices available! Contact me today and let's get you started!
I started out tutoring in college to help out, then was asked by the school district if I would tutor professionally, to the elementary students in the San Bernardino CA area. I have since expanded to tutoring privately, and have taught anywhere from 5 year olds learning piano to high school students wanting that coveted first chair position in trumpet to college level students wanting to learn guitar and beyond. I've even taught music theory and basic voice. With me, you gain the experience, the knowledge and the caring attitude you've come to demand from your instructors.
The tools and tricks of the trade: with me, you gain help understanding the musical alphabet forward and backward. You will spend your first few sessions actually writing more than doing, as you cannot drive a car unless we teach you how to DRIVE. Right!? We can use your materials, we can get some you think you'd enjoy, or we can use mine. I always start by assessing your level of performance, then adding to that until we achieve the level you so desire. With me, you have a dry erase board I use, you learn how to draw musical notation and you get the vocabulary used in music as if you were taking an actual class, which you really are! Your studio or mine, maybe the internet? You will see music is fun, engaging, and that you CAN do whatever you desire with it. Come try me out!
How do I approach teaching music? When asked that, I tell my students I listen to YOUR desires and teach to YOUR level, not mine. You are the student; I am your guide, not your dictator. We will function as best friends do, with teamwork, perserverance, and tricks I use that I share only with those close to me whom I trust and my students who will benefit from the skills I give them the most. Music some say is "difficult" but I say it's a labor of love; if you really want to learn you will, and if you really don't, you find that out fast too! I love teaching, I love seeing you smile when you learn new things, and I like watching you progress. All of my students who I've taught in the school setting ALL achieved three levels higher than expected, in a shorter period of time. This could be you!
