Overview:

I've been playing piano for 45 years, and have taken private lessons a total of 15 years with three different teachers. Music is my passion, and so is teaching, so it brings me a lot of joy to share this with my students. Music has taken me down many avenues in my life, starting at a young age. My family are all musicians, so it has been a constant in my life. At one point I played for church, and as a teenager I played for a ballet class. Like I mentioned before, I've done many weddings and funerals, and look for any opportunity to play piano.

EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching piano for 13 years, and was trained to do so by a woman who is skilled in the art of pedagogy. That was my first job, and later on I opened my own private studio. At one point I've had up to 45 students, and I've enjoyed working with all of them. I give recitals 4 times a year which helps me see progress in my students. We've tried all kinds of performances, some with themes. The last one I did was a recital with only 70's pop and rock songs. They really enjoyed that one!

METHODS USED

The beginning students always start in a book, which is usually John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play", or for the older students, "Bastien's Book for Older Beginners." As they move along, the students often have an idea of what they want to play, and often bring me music, especially the adolescents. I can determine more upon working with the student over time. I definitely customize my lessons for each student, and don't compare one to the other. Some of them have been my students from early childhood to high school graduation.

LESSON STYLE

I have a great rapport with the students because we both generally want to be there. I have learned a lot about myself over the years about the various ways people learn. One cannot approach every student with the same program. Some are more visual and love to read music, some have a great ear and can play back something they only have heard once. I try to be aware of strengths, and work on the things that need more focus. The most important thing to me is that the students will always remember piano lessons as being a great experience no matter what avenue it eventally takes them to.
