Awards:
Ensemble group leader for Rock Bank, 2004, Big Beat Music. Neptune, NJ, sang and arranged music for a group of children 9-12.
Overview:
I have worked writing and performing music since the age of 7, creating my own versions of four-tracks with cassette players. I worked diligently practicing my instrument for hours per day, and build a solid foundation in tempo and understanding of dynamics. I worked in music studios and home lessons for the last 15 years with newer teaching techniques developed on my own through understanding how to teach each student as an individual person. I specialize in teaching drum and piano lessons but can offer some assistance with voice and lyric writing.
EXPERIENCE
I have enjoyed teaching since 1996 as an English teacher, then branching out to music, my first love. I think the most important thing for a teacher is to understand a student's fortes and weaknesses; in order to assess the right formulaic approach to learning. I think overall most students can learn best when they are asked to repeat certain patterns in music foundations, whether it be scales or metromone based copy-cat drumming. I see recitals as a form of comparison and do not push anyone to perform against others.
METHODS USED
I have used all of the store brand version of piano books, and find a preference in the ones I was taught in from the 70's which are too many to mention; but depending on the student, I will find a book that is age appropriate and go on from there. I also do different ear training activities using apps on my phone. I start with nursery rhyme type music for children because that is what is ingrained in their mental ear. That which is remembered is easier to perform. For drums, I focus on repetitive warm ups then move into copy-cat instruction, so that they can see and hear the beat.
LESSON STYLE
I like to bring fun, energy and humor to my lessons. If it is not fun, there is no reason to learn. Music is meant for joyful expression, and maybe sometimes sadness, but if my student is in a certain mood, I always deal with the human first, and then enjoy talking with them for a few minutes to relax, which scientific studies have proven, works best in allowing the brain to absorb new information. I am looking forward to meeting each new student that I have the blessed opportunity to teach as I know I will learn how to be a better teacher as well.
