HS Diploma, Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, VOCAL MUSIC
Nominated for Best Hip Hop/RnB Artist in Philly Hip Hop Awards 2016 & 2017
Hi there! I'm Dejah, a recording and performing artist in Philadelphia. I graduated from Philadelphia's High School for the Creative and Performing Arts' Vocal Department in 2016. I also attended Montgomery County Community College for Sound Recording and Music Technology for a year and a half before I decided to go on a hiatus. I am now giving vocal lessons to local music artists and children that are aspiring to indulge into their music careers. I have written and recorded music since I was 12 years old. I have learned over the years of recording and practicing how to use my voice and picked up very efficient techniques when I had attended CAPA. I still apply many of those techniques in my every day singing, and in my lessons. I have decided to teach young aspiring artists everything I know about vocal music, music theory, songwriting and the industry to prepare them to be the best musician they can be! I aspire to be the kind of person I needed when I was younger. I look forward to being that person for every student that I am blessed to teach!
After four years of daily warm ups and classical singing, I realized what it actually takes to have constant growth in your vocal abilities. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. You have to have a consistent schedule and habits that you set in place to perfect your craft. I learned that we are truly limitless, and there is nothing we can't do. I enjoy helping young musicians recognize that early. As long as they keep pushing themselves, they will continue to be great. I recently just began giving private lessons, but I know that passing my knowledge on to starting musicians will be a great help.
For beginners and young children, I generally demonstrate and have them practice breathing and certain terminology before we begin singing. Once we begin singing, I use the keyboard and have them practice matching pitch. We then do warm ups, and I teach them a couple phrases that will help with pronunciation and shaping their mouths to make certain sounds. For everyone, after we go over our usual warm ups, I like to find out their actual style and taste in music. I find out what songs they are most comfortable singing, and I listen. I listen for strengths, weaknesses and identify the areas that we can either build on or work on. We continue these techniques, and after they are able to sing those songs, I expose them to different genres and techniques that are fit for them.
I teach every student at their own pace. There is never any pressure and I always acknowledge and praise their efforts and accomplishments. Once I get to know the student and their motivation, inspiration and desires, we build a better understanding of each other. I am very personable, creative and I can always adjust to an individual's needs. I love music just as much as my students do, so the more time we spend helping each other grow and be musical, the easier it is to feel the support and energy come alive during our time together.
