I am a certified, experienced, passionate educator who loves teaching students of all ages. I have a Master of Music in Saxophone performance from East Carolina University and a Bachelor of Music Education from The Ohio State University. I have taught as a middle and high school band director/music teacher all over the world. My specialty is woodwinds in particular flute, clarinet and saxophone. I have performed at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall as a saxophonist. I have also performed many times as a woodwind specialist for musicals, big bands orchestras and jazz gigs.
With 30 years of woodwind teaching experience, I have taught all levels from elementary students to college and beyond! I encourage regular practice schedules of a half an hour five times a week. I have developed 15 practical practice techniques that are fun and advance the student at a steady pace. Also, I encourage my students to perform in small recitals biannually. Many of my students have gone on to win many awards such as Region/ All-State placements, festival first chairs and Solo and Ensemble State winners.
For beginning students, I typically start with three separate methods for each instrument that are all offered on SmartMusic. A student may opt to use the books. One method works with tone, another deals with technique and the third one works rhythms. I then slowly integrate solo and ensemble repertoire which leads to your first performance. All along the way, I present to you new, fun practice techniques which propel you forward! If you are an intermediate or advanced learner, methods/solo/ensemble will be recommended based on the style, performance level or end goal objective.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students excel at their lessons! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting achievable goals for each lesson. I foster a positive environment. I am open to questions. Please ask them! In addition, I teach you how to listen while you play. This will help you advance easier because you won’t have to go back to fix any errors you might have learned. Lastly, I will demonstrate during your lesson every week. This way you will know the performance level expected at the next lesson.
