As a former certified school teacher my focus is on laying the right foundation for a lifetime of musical learning and enjoyment for the student. I want my students to develop skills in all aspects and styles of playing so that as their preferences progress they will be equipped for all genres and styles. However if an adult or intermediate level student wants to specialize I can accommodate them. That's why I suggest they incorporate both note reading and chord theory to their scope and sequence of study. I have developed much of my own curriculum for this purpose. I think the emphasis should be on the student's learning and enjoyment of the lessons not just how well the teacher plays. It's also important to look at the teacher's character and values because that greatly influence the student. My specialty is jazz, pop and contemporary worship music.
When I first started teaching in college I used standardized materials and found it was helpful but inadequate to teach everything my students needed. So I began to explore other curriculum and attend the NAMM conventions and talk with other instructors. I saw there was a need for more expanded materials and started writing my own. I now have two complete text books with copyrights along with practice recordings that I make available to my students. If they want to specialize in a certain area I use additional backup materials. I also encouraged my students to be involved in performances and recitals that give them opportunity to utilize their skills. Particularly playing in church is a great outlet for many of my students. I have about 30 years of teaching experience, 20 of which have been full time. I have several endorsements and referrals available if needed. My students' range from hobbyist to career focused.
I have used several curricula and books by Mel Bay, Alfred, Hal Leonard and others. But in the last 15 years I have developed and used mostly my own books and recordings which are very thorough. I started developing this curriculum out of necessity because there was no one book that helped my students from a beginner phase all the way through intermediate and advanced levels in guitar playing. I incorporate both music fundamentals in note reading with basic guitar friendly concepts in chording up to advanced open chords. In my second book I devote most of the curriculum to teaching the concepts of chord theory with movable chord patterns and learning to play scales over chords for improvisation. Therefore my students get a thorough knowledge of reading and playing notes, chord theory concepts and positional guitar playing through movable CAGED system in positional playing in various styles. This way my stiden are equipped for all genres of music. /p>
I try to concentrate on the learning progress and enthusiasm of the student. I want to know what motivates them and the parents and help them focus on that. I also encourage performance opportunities and recitals to give them goals to work towards. I go at the students pace while challenging them to the next learning objective. My lessons are very interactive and tailored to their needs while at the same time following a standardized scope and sequence to make sure all the essentials are covered. I encourage them in each step along the way to enjoy the progress. p>
I hope this helps with your Decision. If you are wondering what type of instructor Dennis is, let me put your mind at ease. First and foremost, Dennis is a good person. He truly cares about helping you become a better guitar player. I had very little skills when I started. Dennis is very patient and always takes the time to explain the why behind the technique. Aside from being easy to work with, Dennis will always push you just beyond your comfort zone. However, looking back it was this gentle guidance that allowed me to practice more and grow as a guitar player. Lastly, Dennis is very professional. He will send lesson reminders is prompt, and flexible. As a busy professional, this is very important to me. You will be very happy that you choose Dennis as your guitar instructor! Regards, Matt
