AA, GIT, Guitar Performance
Having received my first guitar on my 18th birthday, I never looked back. My initial interest in blues and rock music moved to include jazz and I took lessons from a professional jazz guitarist near my home in Kentucky. After several years of practicing 8 hours a day, I furthered my education with an AA in guitar performance from G.I.T. in Hollywood. Having tutored fellow students and taught privately, I am experienced in teaching all skill levels and genres of music. As well as teaching, I currently perform around LA and travel with a band I helped found a few years ago.
Being a passionate student myself, I know what I look for in a teacher and try to live up to that standard. No two people are the same and tailoring lessons to fit each person is the key to my teaching style. I strive to help each student achieve their goals and develop higher goals in the process. This personal approach makes learning not only educational but, more importantly, a lot of fun! Some students love the structure of a learning from a method and others thrive with a lot less structure and that is an equally legitimate pursuit. In the end, keeping the student motivated and enjoying their experience is the primary concern.
All of my students receive personalized lesson plans and materials based on their interests, abilities, and goals. I usually draw from multiple sources including my own materials to make each lesson plan fit the student. It is important to me to balance material that builds techniques on the instrument with material that the student enjoys. Having to do boring exercises with no apparent application to what the player wants to ultimately accomplish is, in my opinion, the biggest mistake made in music education.
The spark in the eye as a musical concept clicks with a student is what drives me as a teacher. If I can lead the student to these discoveries then I am fulfilled as a teacher. Everyone has their own rhythm and will advance at different speeds. Some increase steadily while others make rapid progress and then plateau for a little while. Helping students stay motivated and avoiding the ruts is a big concern for me. There are many concepts for keeping things new and exciting and busting out of ruts and I always have these ready for my students.
